To open a TAB account, you need to verify your identity. You cannot open or access a TAB account without verifying your identity.
To verify your identity, you need to provide TAB with certified copies of:
✓ Two valid Tier 1 (Primary) ID documents, or
✓ One valid Tier 1 (Primary) ID document and one valid Tier 2 (Primary) ID document

Please do not send us your original ID documents – send certified copies only. Please make sure that the certified copies you send contain the original signature of the certifier – we cannot accept a photocopy of the certified copy.

Please read the following information (including the ‘Important notes’ section) carefully.
Tier 1 (primary) ID documents include:
A driver licence* or permit – must:
- Include a photo of the person the document belongs to.
- Be issued by a legitimate authority of a foreign country for the purpose of driving a vehicle.
- Be valid (i.e. not expired).
*You must send a certified copy of both the front and back of your driver licence.
Passport/national identity card – Must:
- Be issued by the government of a foreign country, the United Nations, or an agency of the United Nations for the purpose of foreign travel.
- Include a photo of the person to whom the document has been issued.
- Include the signature of the person to whom the document has been issued.
- Be valid, or not expired longer than 2 years.
Tier 2 (primary) ID documents include:
Citizenship certificate - must:
- Be issued by the government of a foreign country.
Birth certificate – must:
- Be issued by the government of a foreign country, the United Nations, or an agency of the United Nations.
Important notes
To successfully verify your identity using one of the combinations of documents listed:
- At least one of the ID documents provided must display your current residential address:
If neither document lists a current residential address, a certified copy of one of the following documents must also be provided:
- A government agency issued document – must:

- Include your full name and current residential address
- A government issued statement (e.g., a statement from the government department responsible for issuing tax statements to individuals) or a utility bill* – Must:

- Include your full name and current residential address
- Have been issued within the last three months.
*Mobile phone bills or internet bills are not accepted.
- Certified copies of documents must include the original signature of the certifier (i.e., they must not be a photocopy of the signed copy)
- All copies of documents must list the same name and address as those used to create your TAB account
- Documents provided must list the same personal details used to create your TAB account
- All documents not in English must be translated into English by a translator accredited as a ‘professional translator’ by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters LTD - find out more here.
To get copies of your ID documents certified, you need to have an authorised certifier:
✓ View, certify, sign, and date the copies:
To certify, date, and sign the copies, they must write/stamp the following sentence on the copies and provide their signature next to it:
‘I certify this to be a true and accurate copy of the original document as sighted by me on [insert date]’
✓ Provide their full name, qualification, location (professional or personal address), and contact number.
Important note:To be eligible to certify copies of your ID documents, the person acting as the authorised certifier must not be related to you.
For international residents, the people who are classified as authorised certifiers are those who hold one of the following roles.
Authorised certifiers – roles and requirements
- Australian Consular Officer – Must exist as an Australian Consular Officer within the meaning of the Consular Fees Act 1955.
- Australian Diplomatic Officer – Must exist as an Australian Diplomatic Officer within the meaning of theConsular Fees Act 1955.
- Authorised Notary Public:
That is, an officer of the law/public officer who is authorised to certify document authenticity for use overseas/internationally.
- Employee of the Australian Commonwealth Government – Must be an employee of the Australian Commonwealth Government:

- In a country/place outside of Australia and exercising their function in that place; and

- Authorised under paragraph 3 (c) of the Consular Fees Act 1955.
- Employee of the Australian Trade Commission – Must be an employee of the Australian Trade Commission:
- In a country/place outside of Australia and exercising their function in that place; and
- Authorised under paragraph 3 (d) of the Consular Fees Act 1955.
